Owen Roe Winery
Jerry Owen, who closely monitors the vineyards, and David O’Reilly, who makes the wine, have formed Owen Roe in Newberg OR, with a simple purpose: to produce excellent wines from grapes grown and cultivated in the best vineyards in the Pacific Northwest. They have selected top quality grapes from vineyards chosen because they are in areas that ripen fruit fully, and the fruit has excellent acidity and ph balance. These vineyards are in the Willamette, Mid-Columbia, Yakima, and Walla Walla valleys. Each vineyard is contracted by the acre, with strict controls on yields and vine development. The same high principles are found in the winery. They allow only minimal handling, racking by gravity, and excellent cooperage. From the fruit to the bottle, cork, and label, Owen Roe aims for the very best. Owen Roe portfolio includes the flagships DuBrul Vineyard, where his top-tier wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are produced, Sharecroppers Pinot Noir and Cabernet and the Blend Sinister Hand. David O’Reilly also created several new labels including Lenore (Syrah, named after the Edgar Allen Poe poem) and another red wine blend, all produced at the Sunnyside facility with Yakima Valley grapes. Those wine are under the newly founded winery Corvidae and are made with fruit not used in Owen Roe wines, or with fruit from the Yakima Valley carefully selected by David.
At B Town you’ll find the following selection from Owen Roe:
2012 sinister Hand
Blend, typical of a traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This blend of 70%Grenache, 16% Syrah, 9% Mourvedre and 5% Cinsault has lovely aromas of black cherry, cranberry, clove, orange zest and dusty earth. The front palate has notes of cocoa and is nicely balanced with cranberry spice cake and gingerbread flavors. The finish has a refreshing structure with fine tannins.
2012 Sharecroppers Pinot Noir
zingy acidity with bright and juicy marion berry and Rainier cherry flavors. Underlying layers of vanilla and baking spices like cinnamon and black licorice are structurally enhanced with candied fruit and brown sugar nuances. Ready to drink now, however this wine will cellar well for 5+ years. Vineyard Sources: Anna’s, Lenne, Merriman & Sojourner.
2012 Sharecroppers Cabernet Sauvignon
Spicy aromas of jalapeno and cassis lead to flavors of plum, blackberry, olive and brioche. The mouth-feel is balanced with bright acidity, tart berry fruit notes and firm tannins. We recommend opening this wine now and enjoying it at a young age, however, this will age well for 4-6 years when properly cellared.
2012 Abbot’s Table
Reminiscent of the bold Abbot’s Table blends of past vintages, this 2012 bottling is predominately blended with the following varietals (Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Malbec, Blaufränkisch and Merlot). This Yakima Valley red wine has mouthwatering aromas of plum, raspberry, white pepper and herbaceous undertones. The mouth-feel has lovely depth and richness with bright acidity, rounded out with hints of vanilla, dark cocoa nibs, robust violet and spice.
2011 The Rook Blend
Corvidae’s 2011 ‘The Rook’ is made to showcase the world-class Merlot grown in the cooler, higher elevation sites located in the Yakima Valley and the Horse Heaven Hills. The wine is aged in mostly neutral French oak to keep the bright fruit flavors lively in this very cool vintage. The addition of 17% Malbec lends some soft, red fruits to the aromatics and flavors. Showing red and black fruits, sarsaparilla, orange peel, cinnamon and tobacco, this crisply textured red is balanced by fine grained tannins and a rich, pillow soft mid-palate.
2011 The Keeper Cabernet Franc
Several distinctive vineyards from the Yakima Valley AVA were sourced to produce this exceptional and affordable Cabernet Franc. Owen Roe sourced perfectly ripened fruit for this wine, and the result is an exceptional and affordable example of this unique varietal. Lovely fresh tobacco and green olive fragrance provide a gracious backdrop for the exuberant berry fruit with just a hint of violets. This is a great price for a rich and full-bodied Cabernet Franc.
2010 Lenore Syrah
Lenore Syrah is made from 95% Syrah and 5% Grenache sourced from several vineyards throughout the Yakima Valley and the Horse Heaven Hills. The 2011 ‘Lenore’ Syrah shows the cool character of the 2011 vintage. High-toned, bright fruit flavors with great natural acidity and low alcohol give this wine great versatility. Extended time in predominately neutral oak makes this wine approachable right out of the gate. Showing black and blue fruits, cola, rosemary and smoke, the 2011 ‘Lenore’ has a focused attache with a rounded, textural mid-palate.
